State police solve year-old burglary, arrest Jim Thorpe man

State police at the Lehighton barracks have arrested Ryan E. Wurst, 31, of the unit block of Hopi Road, Jim Thorpe, on charges relating to a burglary that happened March 6, 2018, in the unit block of Hemlock Drive, Jim Thorpe.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Eric Schrantz of Jim Thorpe, and committed to the Carbon County Correctional Facility, Nesquehoning, in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Wurst is charged with occupying a building for overnight accommodations in which no person was present, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, receiving stolen property, criminal trespass and two counts of criminal mischief.

In an affidavit of probable cause, Trooper Justin Swartz provided the details of the incident that led to Wurst’s arrest.

He said troopers responded to the Hemlock Drive residence last March to investigate a burglary that took place when someone broke a rear window on the home leading to a bathroom. Police said they discovered a blood trail leading to the front door.

Police said the victim’s son, who lives at the residence, told police that his safe was the only item taken and it contained three separate envelopes containing $2,600 in cash, a Samsung Galaxy 4 Note 4, two checkbooks, a Social Security card, title to a Nissan Pathfinder and a metal tin containing approximately $30 in coins.

The victim told police the only other person who knew about the safe was a Veronica Lynn Vogel.

Police said as the investigation unfolded, the blood sample was sent for processing to the Wyoming Regional Laboratories and a subsequent report generated by the state police Bureau of Forensic Services identified the blood being that of Wurst.

Police said the home owner received a check for $4,062.86 in April of last year, representing the claim loss.

In November, police said, Vogel’s father told police his daughter was an inmate in the county jail. On Jan. 8 of this year, the affidavit states, Vogel agreed to questioning by police, at which time she said she was at the residence with Ryan Wurst and Mathew M. Wurst, at the time of the burglary.

The woman told police she told the Wursts about the safe and they gained entry to the home via the rear of the residence and stole the safe.

Vogel also informed police Ryan Wurst was bleeding at the time from having been cut from the broken window.
