Fire at former Days Inn believed to be work of arsonist

Several hundred thousand dollars in damages resulted from a fire that officials believed was the work of an arsonist in Schuylkill County on Friday.

State police at the Schuylkill Haven barracks said firemen responded to the former Days Inn in North Manheim Township. The building had been unoccupied.

Police said upon arrival at the site, located along Route 61, firemen encountered fire extending through the roof in the south end of the building. Police said due to the integrity of the structure, firemen suppressed the fire from the exterior only. The entire length of the building was damaged and the entire length of the roof collapsed.

Police said the preliminary investigation showed the fire started in multiple places within the building.

They have labeled the incident a “criminal act of arson” and are asking anyone with information on the fire to contact them or Pennsylvania Crime- Stoppers.
