March 16, 1991 — Northern Lehigh’s Ivan Rosario captures the state gold medal at 125 pounds in Class 2A, winning the title on the final tiebreaking criteria — referee’s decision. Rosario battles defending state champ J.J. Fasnacht of Pine Grove to a 2-2 overtime tie, each one gaining a pair of escapes. The two also draw a warning for stalling, which deadlock the wrestlers on every criteria except the last: “the referee (and the assistant, if used) shall determine the winner on the basis of overall wrestling ability, including aggressiveness in the entire match.” Herb Dodd, a District 7 official and the head referee for the bout, and assistant William Constantine rule in favor of Rosario, giving him the gold.
