The remains of a woman were found in the ruins of a mobile home that was destroyed by fire Monday evening in Monroe County.

County coroner Thomas Yanac said about 6 p.m. a fire was discovered at a mobile home along Cottontrail Lane in Middle Smithfield Township, near Bushkill. Township and Bushkill fire companies responded to the scene along with EMS unit and state troopers from the Stroudsburg barracks. Marshalls Creek fire company also responded to the scene.

After the fire was extinguished, human remains were discovered. A state police forensic science unit and fire marshal responded to the scene. The remains were removed from the scene just before midnight and it was determined to be that of a woman who resided in the home.

Yanac said a autopsy and DNA testing will be done on Wednesday to determine the identity of the woman and the cause of death. The investigation is continuing.
