Police say Tamaqua man tried to choke woman

A Tamaqua man wanted in connection with an August 2018 domestic assault is behind bars after being apprehended in Northampton County on Tuesday.

Jacob Matthew Youngkin, 28, of West Rowe Street, was arraigned Wednesday morning before District Judge Stephen Bayer, of Tamaqua, on charges of strangulation, simple assault and harassment. The charges were filed by Tamaqua patrolman Anthony Stanell after a victim came forward on Aug. 31.

According to her statement, she was driving along Route 100 around 3 p.m. on Aug. 28, videochatting with Youngkin. He didn’t believe she was alone in her car and demanded that she pull off the road, which she did. He pulled up behind her in another vehicle, yelled at her, took her phone, then drove away. She followed him to his apartment in Tamaqua. Once she entered the home, he wouldn’t allow her to leave and took away her keys.

The next morning, she asked to use her phone to check in at work. While she was using the phone, Youngkin saw that she had a text message and ripped the phone from her hand. When she tried to get it back, he pinned her to the bed, placed his hand over her mouth and threatened to put her to sleep. As she continued to cry, he placed his hands around her throat to choke her. He stopped when someone else in the home came to the bedroom door to see about the noise.

Bayer set bail at $10,000 percentage, which Youngkin was unable to post. He was placed in the Northampton County Prison to answer to an outstanding arrest warrant issued by Colonial Regional Police.
