Palmerton photographer brings show displayed at Capitol back home

Last year, a Palmerton photographer got to display her photography show at the state capital in Harrisburg. And for 10 days this month, she’s bringing it home for all to see.

“I wanted something that was more accessible,” Lynn Shupp said of her collection, known as “PA Road Trip,” which was displayed in the Capitol’s rotunda through April 2018.

A snapshot into local sights and activities across the commonwealth, “PA Road Trip” was — and still is — inspired by Shupp’s own personal journey to get to know her home state.

Shupp said that when most people think of vacation, they envision far off destinations and traveling out-of-state. But she wanted to capture a different picture of what adventure could look like.

“I was like, ‘You know what, I kind of want to just see what Pennsylvania has to offer,’” Shupp recalled. “And I wanted to do it from a photo standpoint, because that’s what I do. That’s how I tell my story.”

The show was a compilation of pictures taken over the course of a year, during which Shupp and her husband made day and weekend trips to different locations, from local scenes to not-so-local ones.

And Shupp hasn’t stopped shooting. Since being shown in the capital, “PA Road Trip” has grown. Eventually, Shupp said, she hopes to compile the work into a book.

“This is, at least for awhile, going to be a work in progress,” she said.

But that doesn’t mean you have to wait to see Shupp’s collection. Starting this month, “PA Road Trip” will be displayed in the upstairs gallery of Palmerton Library on Delaware Avenue.

“It’s (the show) a little bit of everything to kind of show that our state definitely has a lot to see,” Shupp said. “There’s a little something for everyone.”

“PA Road Trip” will hang in the Palmerton Library through March 28. On Monday, Shupp will also speak about her journey shooting the collection on behalf of Palmerton’s Historical Society, and on March 17, an artist reception will take place starting at 1 p.m. and ending at 3 p.m. Both events will be held in the library’s Knight’s Gallery and are free to attend.

“What I’m hoping this show does is (inspire) people to check out our state and explore the area around them,” Shupp said.

“Every person, every place, everything has a story,” she said.
