Four area wrestlers in regional semis

WEST LAWN - Ethan Mordaunt’s first memories of the regional tournament elicited memories of disappointment.

The Jim Thorpe senior took a step toward changing his recollection of the event a year ago by surviving the two days at Wilson West Lawn High School and securing a spot at states.

He continued to change the narrative Friday night in pinning Pequea Valley’s Joey Coblentz.

Mordaunt needed just 1:40 in his 220-pound quarterfinal match to dispatch Coblentz and punch his ticket to states, and collect his 100th career victory in the process.

“It’s great,” Mordaunt said. “Two years ago, I came here and I was five points away from making it to states. I’m just proud of myself, and thankful for my coaches for pushing me as much as they have, and as they continue to.

“I only won like nine matches as a freshman, so to be here, feels pretty good.”

Coming off his first district title a week ago, Mordaunt had a first round bye, and had to wait for his opportunity to take the mat.

“It was kind of in the back on my mind,” he said. “I was kind of stirring a little bit. I was just excited to go wrestle another match. I’ve got at least two more matches tomorrow, and I’m just trying to end it with a bang.”

Mordaunt will wrestle Tyrone Fowler (Bishop McDevitt 12) in the semis.

“It’s awesome to see one of your wrestlers achieve their goals,” said Olympians head coach Shawn Albert.

Tamaqua’s Bronson Strouse, also coming off a district title a week ago and with a first round bye, pinned Maximus Mcmurray (Trinity) in 2:09.

“I wasn’t feeling like myself right away,” said Strouse. “Usually I try to take shots, but I was sick all week; I don’t know what I had, but I was coughing and stuff.

“I’ll try to get my shots in in the semifinals.”

Strouse will wrestle Emmanuel Lawal of Church Farm School in the semis.

A pair of Lehighton wrestlers guaranteed themselves a spot in Hershey by making the semifinals.

Whiteman dropped Blake Bruner of Halifax in the 145 quarters, while Pagotto pinned Daniel Kosinski in his 152 match.

“It was nice,” said Lehighton head coach Floyd Brown. “They are two of our senior captains. To see them punch their ticket tonight, they can kind of relax a little bit; there isn’t as much stress on them. They can just come back and let it fly.

“They are two of the hardest workers, and they’ve been with the program for four years. To see them both make it, it’s awesome. They both wrestled so well.

Whiteman controlled the action in his quarterfinal match against Halifax’s Blake Bruner.

The senior set the tone from the opening whistle, securing the first takedown within the first 30 seconds, never letting Bruner get comfortable.

“Once I get to score first, I feel like I’m in control,” Whiteman said. “It just helps me build momentum for the rest of the match.

“I’m a senior, it’s my last shot, so I have to go all out. I have to go out every match and do as much as I can, because this is my last shot to make it to states.”

Whiteman opened strong against Camp Hill’s Sean Getty, getting the first takedown 30 seconds into the match. The senior held on for a 3-1 decision.

“I feel pretty good,” said Whiteman. “I was able to get the jitters out in the first match. I feel really good.”

Pagotto withstood several charges from Kosinski to reach the semis. The senior grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period and extended the advantage to 3-0 in the second period.

Kosinski kept driving, but Pagotto always had an answer.

“I just had to keep driving,” said Pagotto. “He’s a kid that goes for five-point moves, and has big throws, so the match could have turned quickly.

“I was able to watch his other match, so it helped a lot to know what was coming. That was awesome. That was a big relief to get the pin.”

After a runner-up finish at last week’s district tournament, Pagotto didn’t wait long to knock off the rust, getting the opening takedown before pinning Fairfield’s Aaron Shriner in 1:27.

“Logan and I have been practicing together. It helps a lot,” said Whiteman. “We’ve been wrestling together since we were like 5 years old. Just knowing each other so well, it helps so much, because we’re like the same type of wrestler. It’s just fun when you have one of your best friends wrestling with you.

“It’s awesome. It’s what we worked for since we were little kids to make it to states, and we finally did it. For us to both do it in the same night, it’s pretty awesome.”

Whiteman will wrestle District 11 champ Andrew Cerniglia of Notre Dame Green Pond in the 145 semis. Pagotto will face District 3 champ Trenton Harder of Bermudian Springs in the 152 semis.

Tamaqua’s Nate Wickersham dropped an 11-7 decision to Littlestown’s Carl Harris in the quarters.

Wickersham powered past Northern Lebanon’s Seth Ebersole with a pin at 1:56 of the first period. The match was tied 2-2 before Wickersham picked up the fall. The sophomore will wrestle Mehki Wardlaw (Bishop McDevitt 12) in the second round of consolations.

Jim Thorpe’s Derek Hunter fell to Damon James (Boiling Springs) 4-2 in sudden victory overtime in the quarterfinals.

Hunter didn’t waste any time in his opening bout, pinning Northern Lebanon’s Nick Goodyear in 1:39 in the first round.

Tamaqua’s Aaron Coccio dropped his first round match, 16-4 to Octorara’s Braedan Amole. Coccio will wrestle Dorian Gonzalez (Newport) in the second round of consolations.

Lehighton’s Alex Zeigenfuss took Octorara’s Jacob Eckman to overtime before falling 6-2 in sudden victory. Zeigenfuss will wrestle Dominic Kelly (Trinity) in the second round of consolations.

Northwestern’s Jake Dellicker kept his tournament alive by pinning Cody Witzer (Faith Christian) in 2:08 in his 113-pound first round consolation match. Dellicker lost an 18-5 major decision to Christian Doi (Camp Hill) in his first round match.

Dellicker will wrestle Biglerville’s Ethan Slaybaugh in his second round consolation match.

After getting pinned by Nick Kostyak (Boiling Springs) in his opening round match, the Tigers’ Will Dellicker stayed alive with a forfeit in his first round consolation match. The senior will wrestle Tulpehocken’s David Bortz in the second round of consolations.

Jim Thorpe’s William Schwartz saw his tournament come to an end with a 5-0 loss to Susquenita’s Jaxen Zimmerman in the first round of consolations at 106 pounds. Schwartz was pinned by Noah Frack (Brandywine Heights) in the opening round.

Lehighton’s Lucas Sangiuliano also saw his tournament end with a 5-3 loss to Greg Stevens of Conwell Egan in the first round of consolations. Sangiuliano was pinned by Upper Dauphin’s Bronson Garber in his first match.
