Lehighton traffic stop stems from Coaldale alert

An incident that resulted in a silver PT Cruiser being stopped in Mahoning Township Thursday night remains under investigation.

Coaldale Police Chief Keith Krapf said Friday morning that police were dispatched at 10:30 p.m. to the area of Taco Bell in the Carbon Plaza Mall, where four men were stopped.

“We did have an incident where a man came in the station claiming that he was threatened and saw a gun,” Krapf said. “However, he later changed his story, and he’s not sure if they had a gun.”

An initial report indicated a man pointed a gun at an officer. Krapf stressed, “There was no weapon ever pulled on an officer.”

State police from Lehighton stopped the car after an alert was issued. Several police cars responded to the scene.

Two men were handcuffed at the scene but later released.

He said the “supposed” suspect is from Lansford, but would not release the person’s name at this time.

Krapf said the vehicle was stopped, and there was no weapon found.

A resident posted on Facebook Thursday night warning people about a Silver PT cruiser that slowed down next to him. One of the occupants shouted at him, “Get over here or else.”

The resident said it “looked like” the person in the vehicle had a gun in his hand, but he wasn’t sure, and that as he was about to call the cops, the vehicle sped off.

Krapf said police are continuing the investigation, and that anyone with information is asked to contact the borough police department at 570-645-3060.
