Man escapes serious injury after falling asleep behind wheel

A Berks County man escaped serious injury after he fell asleep behind the wheel, causing his vehicle to travel off the roadway, flip over and land in a creek in East Penn Township early Saturday morning.

State Police at Lehighton said the incident occurred at 6:41 a.m. when a 2015 Ram driven by Adam P. Vargas, 24, of Hamburg, was traveling north on West Lizard Creek Road.

That’s when police say Vargas fell asleep and his truck went off the roadway, striking a guide rail, before it flipped and landed in a creek.

Vargas, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured.

He was cited with a traffic violation.

Also assisting on scene were the East Penn Township Fire Department, Mahoning Valley Ambulance, and Schlier’s Towing.
