Weatherly Polar Plunge brings out the Brave

At least it was sunny.

With the temperature at 34 degrees and approximately 100 spectators bundled in heavy coats, knit hats and scarves watching from the hillside, 33 men, women and children walked and dunked themselves into the icy water of Weatherly’s Eurana Park during the second annual Polar Plunge held on Saturday.

The event raised $1,402 for the Weatherly Ambulance Association. Participants paid an entry fee of $20, while spectators enjoyed hot soups, hot chocolate, coffee and baked goods for sale inside the park’s building. Outside, everyone enjoyed music supplied by a DJ while they waited for the event to begin.

The polar plunge is the brainchild of Weatherly resident Michele Connors, who took her first plunge four years ago at Coney Island, New York.

“It was something on my bucket list, so I just did it,” she said.

Her husband, Tom Connors, served as master of ceremonies and was the first to go into the water.

“It’s a great event for the community, and we are able to help out the ambulance association,” Tom Connors said.

Last year’s event attracted 20 participants, with proceeds benefiting the park and the American Cancer Society. Michelle Connors said the event will be held again next year with a new beneficiary.

“We plan to have a new cause each year.”

The first place winner for favorite plunger was Nicole Snyder. Second place was Kenny Jacoby, and “Mac” and Billy Graver from the Flying Aces tied for third place.
