Local roundup: Results from Dec. 29

Austin Williams and Ethan Mordaunt gave the host Olympians two wrestling champions Saturday at the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament. Lehighton’s Lucas Sangiuliano also placed first at the Tony Iasiello Christmas City Tournament.

In girls’ basketball action, junior Emma Kuczynski reached a scoring milestone as Tamaqua stayed unbeaten.

WRESTLING

Christmas Tournament

The Olympians captured two titles at the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament.

Austin Williams (182) and Ethan Mordaunt (220) walked away with gold medals for Thorpe. Williams pinned Bloomsburg’s Jake Mattive in 1:45 in the finals, while Mordaunt posted a 3-0 decision over Salisbury’s Jonah Niesbaum.

Jarrin Geisinger (160) placed second; Kendall Herron (195) was third; William Schwartz (106) took fourth; Jared Newhall (170) finished fifth; and Gabe Heaney (120), Andrew Eisenhart (132), Caleb McDermott (152) were seventh for the Olympians.

For Panther Valley, Sincere Flamer (285) finished sixth; and Colby Newton (126) and Eric Moyer (160) placed eighth.

Jim Thorpe was fourth in the 17-team field. Danville won the team title.

Christmas City Tournament

Lucas Sangiuliano captured the title at 132 pounds for Lehighton. Sangiuliano also won the Eric Waas pinner award for the most pins in the least amount of time.

Chris Whitman (145) took second, while Logan Pagotto (152) and Rich Fronheiser (170) both took fourth, Alex Ziegenfuss took fifth at 182 and Christian Rodriguez (220) came in sixth.

Lehighton finished in fifth place out of 19 teams with 102 points. Bethlehem Catholic captured the team championship with 264.

Bob Rohm Memorial Tournament

Pleasant Valley finished 2-3 in the team competition at the Bob Rohm Memorial Tournament.

The Bears defeated Trinity, 52-21, and North Penn Liberty High, 44-27. PV dropped decisions to York Suburban (42-39), Mount Carmel (51-28) and Muncy (58-18).

Anthony Mazzella was undefeated on the day for Pleasant Valley, with five wins, while Chris Frable notched four victories.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Nativity

Tamaqua remained undefeated and Emma Kuczynski reached a career milestone in a 59-33 non-league win over Nativity.

Kuczynski led the Blue Raiders (7-0) with 24 points. The junior became the 13th Lady Raider to hit the 1,000-point plateau, reaching the mark with 3.4 seconds left in the second quarter. She now has 1,011 career points, and is in 11th place on the all-time scoring list, surpassing Lisa Willing (1,001) and Missy Longhi (1,008). Kuczynski also notched a double-double in the win, pulling down 13 rebounds.

Emily Titus also added 10 points for Tamaqua.

Tamaqua won the JV game, 46-21. Serena Jones (17 points) and Emma Hope (14 points, 23 rebounds) paced the Raiders (4-0).

Marian utilized a strong defensive effort to stifle Lebanon Catholic and pick up a 46-19 non-league win and the Lebanon Catholic Holiday Tournament title.

Isabella Schwabe led the way with 10 points for the Fillies (5-2).

Mount Carmel downed Weatherly 55-43 to win the Lady Wreckers Holiday Tournament.

Tournament MVP Dani Rae Renno scored 36 points and collected 18 rebounds for Mount Carmel (4-4).

Emily Zoscin led the Wreckers (6-2) with 13 points.

Weatherly took care of Schuylkill Haven for a 73-27 non-league victory on the opening night of the Lady Wrecker Holiday Tournament.

Emily Zoscin led the Lady Wreckers with a game-high 23 points. Grace Miller tallied 12 points, and Ashley James chipped in with 10.

Isabella Bernitsky scored 14 points for the Lady Hurricanes (1-6) in the loss.

Lehighton turned back Catasauqua to claim a 63-58 non-league win.

Zach Crum paced the Indians (3-6), who had three players score in double figures, with 19 points. Addison Howland tallied 14 points, while Ben Schatz added 11.

D’angelo Martinez and Derek Troxell both scored 15 points for the Roughies (1-6). Andrew Martinez recorded 10 points.

Panther Valley-MMI Prep

Panther Valley picked up its fourth straight win, knocking off MMI Prep 75-71 in non-league action.

Brandon Stilitino buried nine threes - including six in the first quarter - en route to a 33-point performance for the Panthers (8-1). Rene Figueroa also had a big game, dropping 30 points.

Marcus Kassick scored 30 points for MMI (4-3), while Mason Marchetti and Matt Marchetti tallied 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Pottsville pulled away from Tamaqua to pick up a 54-36 Schuylkill League Division 1 win.

Mason Barnes scored a game-high 17 points for the Tide, (6-2), who outscored the Raiders 33-17 in the second half. Kevin Schenk tallied 15 points,

Brayden Knoblauch’s 11 points led Tamaqua (7-2, 2-1). Michael Bonetsky added 10 points.

Pottsville also won the JV game, 59-44.

Weatherly jumped out to a big lead and rolled past Immanuel Christian 87-23 to wrap-up a third-place finish in the Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech Tournament.

Scotty Zoscin scored a game-high 26 points, with 21 coming in the first quarter, for the Wreckers (5-4), who led 51-7 after the opening period and 73-9 at the intermission. Mason Gerhart (15 points) and Ethan Broskoskie (14) also contributed in the victory.

Isacc Tripp’s 15 points led Immanuel Christian.
