L.B. Morris students learn about helping others

Fifth-grade students at the L.B. Morris Elementary School in Jim Thorpe recently took part in a writing project about being homeless in a city and building a model of a shelter to survive the elements.

The model homeless shelters would be designed for someone to be able to survive in a modern-day city without anybody’s help or assistance as far as a building to stay in.

In their writing assignment, students described the materials they would use for the shelter and what they would do for clothing, food and water.

A number of students went on to create model shelters designed to withstand poor weather conditions such as freezing temperatures, wind and precipitation.

Students incorporated the use of materials one could actually find in a modern city.

Also tied in with this theme, the students did a schoolwide fundraiser for several local charities including food banks, Peaceful Knights, Carbon County Friends of Animals and Care Net of Carbon County.
