Carbon County court — drug cases

A Luzerne County man pleaded guilty in Carbon County court on Monday to a drug dealing charge and was sentenced to a prison term.

He was one of seven defendants in pending drug-related cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Jarlin Lara

, 22, of Hazleton, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, heroin, and also a charge of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

He was arrested on Sept. 19 by Weatherly police following a traffic stop at Carbon and First streets. Cocaine was also found in the vehicle.

On the drug count Matika sentenced Lara to serve three to 18 months in the county prison and on the DUI count, 72 hours to six months in jail, with the terms running concurrently.

He was also ordered on the drug count to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use, render 75 hours of community service when paroled and supply an DNA sample.

On the DUI count he was fined $1,000 and his license was suspended for a year. He was given four days spent in jail to date on the charges.

He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on Dec. 27.

Other pleas

Amy L. Freed

, 32, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance, heroin.

She was arrested on Sept. 6 by Mahoning Township police in the 200 block of Lower Nis Hollow Drive.

She is currently an inmate in the county prison and has a pending bench warrant proceeding in Northampton County.

Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 50 hours of community service when eventually paroled.

Steven Christopher Jones Jr.

, 27, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on July 3 by Nesquehoning police in the area of Stock Street and Tippets Road following a vehicle stop.

He was placed on probation for year and ordered to render 50 hours of community service and get a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Ashley Terefinko

, 33, of Bethlehem, and formerly of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance, crystal methamphetamine.

She was arrested by Lansford police on March 22 in the 500 block of East Abbott Street, when police executed a search warrant at the home.

Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use and render 50 hours of community service.

Chaun James Samaroo

, 25, of Northampton, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana.

He was arrested on Sept. 20 by Lansford police in the unit block of Abbott Street.

Matika imposed a fine of $150 and costs.

Maralys Diaz-Ayala

, 27, of Allentown, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana.

He was arrested on April 16 by Summit Hill police following a traffic stop. A more serious charge of firearm not to be carried without a license was dropped in a plea agreement with the district attorney’s office.

Matika imposed a fine of $150 and costs.

Burnice Yvonne Smith

, 37, of Allentown, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia with a charge of possession of a controlled substance dropped in a plea agreement.

She was arrested following a traffic stop along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge.

Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.

Makur Lamarr Sharp

, 25, of Norristown, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana.

He was arrested on May 28 by state police at Fern Ridge following a traffic stop along Interstate 80 in East Side Borough.

Matika imposed a fine of $150 and costs.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
