Panther Valley senior Rene Figueroa kicked off the season by surpassing a scoring milestone in a rout of Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech.

BOYS BASKETBALL

CMVT-Panther Valley

Figueroa recorded his 1,000th career point as Panther Valley downed Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, 80-35, in its season opener.

Figueroa entered the game needing 23 points to reach the milestone and finished the contest with a game-high 24.

The Panthers, who blew the game open with a 34-point second quarter, received 15 points from Erick Marchorro while Stilitino added 11. Carter Brettle chipped in with eight points.

Eleven different players scored for PV, which also won the JV game by a 55-19 score.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sch. Haven-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe rolled to a 60-9 non-league victory over Schuylkill Haven in its season opener.

The Olympians raced to a 24-0 first-quarter lead behind 11 points from Leila Hurley.

Hurley finished with a game-high 16 points, while Skyler Searfoss contributed 14. Thorpe also received 10 points from Olivia Smelas and 11 rebounds from Riley Solt.

Meadowbrook Christian-Weatherly

Weatherly scored the game’s first 30 points and cruised to a 71-21 non-league victory over Meadowbrook Christian.

Emily Zoscin scored 15 of her game-high 22 points in the opening quarter as the Wreckers raced to a 28-0 advantage.

The winners, who forced 24 first-half turnovers, also received 11 points from Megan Peifer and 10 from Abby Hernandez.

Ten different players ended up scoring for Weatherly.

Northwestern jumped out to an early double-digit lead and held off Whitehall for a 51-42 non-league victory.

Six different players scored for the Tigers in the first quarter as the home team built a 16-4 advantage.

Sydney Sevrain finished with a game-high 17 points, including a 9-of-10 effort at the foul line.

Sage Christopher added nine points for the winners, while Emily Sekeeak chipped in with seven.

Tamaqua-Hazleton

Hazleton swept Tamaqua in swimming action.

The Cougars won the boys meet by a 114-59 score, while the girls gained a 111-72 victory.

The Blue Raiders received a pair of firsts from Bill Frederick (50 free, one-meter diving) in the boys meet, while Ashley Jones (one-meter diving) and Brianna Dumond (100 butterfly) each had one first in the girls competition.
