Explosive substance found inside home in Banks Township

A bomb team is on site at a home along Spring Mountain Road in Banks Township after a person visiting the residence found an explosive substance inside a first aid kit.

Mark Nalesnik, Carbon County emergency management coordinator, said that this incident is not in any way an intentional act.

He said that a container of picric acid that could be volatile was found inside the home.

Picric acid had been used decades ago as an antiseptic to treat burns, as well as in some medicines, but is known for its explosive properties, especially in its powder form.

Nalesnik said he was notified around 11 a.m. by the son of the homeowner, who found the substance and knew this was not safe.

Nalesnik then contacted the Lehigh County EMA hazmat team, which stated that no one should go near it and sent its bomb squad.

The bomb squad is now in the process of securing the acid and will detonate it in a field across the street from the home.

Spring Mountain Road is closed in Banks Township at this time between Route 93 and Quakake Road because of the incident.
