Reading Railroad slideshow presented in Tamaqua

The Tamaqua Historical Society will host a Reading Railroad slide presentation from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The presentation will feature photographs taken by the late Arch and Bruce Kantner, Schuylkill County brothers who photographed and documented the Reading Railroad from the 1940s through the 1960s during the railroad’s heyday.

This special presentation is part of the historical society’s yearlong celebration of the 250th anniversary of the first successful use of Anthracite Coal. The slideshow is a rare opportunity to see hundreds of slides of the Reading Railroad taken along the mainline from Reading to Schuylkill County and beyond. In addition to scenes from the mainline, the Kantners also took photos along the Little Schuylkill, Schuylkill Valley and Catawissa branches. The slide presentation is a tribute to the Kantner Brothers by longtime friend and railroader, Craig Werley of Berks County.

Admission is $10 at the door and there are no advance reservations.

The program will be held at the Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St., Tamaqua. Light refreshments and snacks will be available for sale. For more information, call the Tamaqua Historical Society at 610-597-6722 and leave a message.
