Nesquehoning Historical Society to present special public lecture

The Nesquehoning Historical Society will be presenting a special public lecture at 6 p.m. on Monday at the historical society’s home, 157 W. Railroad St., Nesquehoning.

Local historian and author, Vince Hydro, will be giving a PowerPoint presentation with more than 100 slides covering the history of the Summit Hill and Mauch Chunk Switchback Railroad.

Hydro is the author of “The Mauch Chunk Switchback: America’s Pioneer Railroad.” He has previously presented at the Nesquehoning Historical Society. There will be pictures and discussions of multiple topics, including:

• The original “Stone Turnpike” (which was replaced by the Switchback Railroad)

• The differences between the Switchback and Nesquehoning’s Room Run gravity railroad

• The little-known connection of the Switchback to the Hacklebernie Tunnel

• The club that used the Switchback Railroad as a “Bridle Path”

• Some famous visitors to Mauch Chunk who traveled over the Switchback

• Various tourist attractions on the Switchback

Hydro is currently researching and writing a history of Nesquehoning’s Room Run gravity railroad. People who may have original artifacts or pictures relating to the Switchback or Room Run railroads are invited to bring them to the meeting.

There will be a question and answer period after Hydro’s presentation. Light refreshments will be served and everyone in the community is invited. All meeting are open to the public.

The regular monthly meeting of the society will be held at 6 p.m. on Nov. 27. The topic of business will be the election of the new slate of officers for 2019.

For those who would like to join the Nesquehoning Historical Society, the dues are $10 per year. Payment can be made Monday.
