Indians eliminated from state playoffs

BLOOMSBURG – It was all Wyoming Seminary in Saturday’s PIAA field hockey quarterfinal game against Lehighton.

Seminary routed the Indians 11-0, and easily advanced to Tuesday’s Class 1A semifinal game versus Greenwood.

Junior Hannah Maxwell got Wyoming Seminary on the board just before the four-minute mark in the game, which began total domination by coach Karen Klassner’s team. Maxwell led the Blue Knights with four goals on the day, and the scores just kept piling on at Central Columbia High School. Three of Maxwell’s four goals came before halftime, and Seminary held a comfortable 6-0 lead.

Regardless of the final outcome, Lehighton head coach Vanessa Rimbey was still proud of her Indian squad for getting as far as they did.

“We knew they were really great strikers,” Rimbey said of Seminary. “I think in the game, they didn’t have one cheap goal that came. They were all amazing, really great goals. We focused a lot on marking in the circle.

“I think they were a little bit more proactive in the second half, but it didn’t end how we wanted.”

Lehighton’s lone highlight of the game came early on in the contest when the Indians made a big defensive stop to prevent another Seminary goal.

The Indians started their state playoff run with an opening-round 2-1 win against Susquenita before a chilly and breezy game Saturday with field hockey powerhouse Wyoming Seminary. Lehighton also added the District 11 1A championship to its 2018 resume.

The Indians’ accomplishments gave the team plenty to be proud of.

“I’m happy they came this far, and they have nothing to hold their heads low about,” Rimbey said. “I’m proud of them.

“I was really impressed coming into the season, because last year, I felt like we only had one or two people scoring goals and we really focused on having multiple people scoring goals this season. We didn’t rely on one person. I think they took to their positions, their new positions and roles very well this year.”

Wyoming Seminary takes its 19-2-1 record to the 1A state semifinal, while the Indians finish the season 16-5-1.

GOALS, GOALS, GOALS

… Among Wyoming Seminary’s 11 goals, the day belonged to Maxwell and her four-goal game. Alex Wesneski was the only other Seminary player scoring multiple goals in the game with two. Julia Christian, Quinn Medico, Kelsey Reznick, Bari Lefkowitz and Ava Bufalino each added a goal for the Blue Knights.

ASSISTS, ASSISTS, ASSISTS

… There were a few Blue Knight players contributing to Saturday’s scoring bonanza. Julia Christian led the way in assists with three, two of which came on Maxwell’s goals. Maxwell also helped assist Christian’s goal and one of Wesneski’s scores. Elisabeth Seyfarth, Wesneski, Lefkowitz and Aubrey Mytych all had an assist on the day.

THEN THERE WERE FOUR

… Wyoming Seminary, Greenwood, Oley Valley and Newport are the four remaining teams competing for the 1A field hockey state championship. The championship game is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Whitehall-Coplay High School.
