State police are investigating the following crashes:

• State police at Frackville reported investigating a one-vehicle crash about 3:54 p.m. on Thursday along Interstate 81 in Ryan Township, Schuylkill County.

Troopers said William E. Coward, 48, of Ashland, was driving a 2007 Ford Escape northbound when he lost control of the vehicle when trying to avoid something that was laying on the road. The Escape went onto the west berm and struck the guard rail, where it came to rest.

Coward refused medical treatment at the scene. Troopers were assisted by volunteers from the Mahanoy City Fire Department and Ryan Township ambulance personnel.

Coward was cited for the crash. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

• State police at Schuylkill Haven reported investigating two crashes.

A two-vehicle crash was reported at 1:44 p.m. on Friday along Route 183, in Wayne Township. Troopers said Thomas C. Shirley, 87, of Schuylkill Haven, was driving a 2001 Subaru Outback southbound and failed to see a stopped 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by Jason C. Wright, 39, of Pottsville, who was attempting a left turn into a private driveway. The front of the Outback struck the rear of the Silverado.

Shirley was injured and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. Wright was not injured.

A one-vehicle crash was reported at 7:33 a.m. on Oct. 18 along Route 895 in Auburn borough. Troopers said Michael J. Wertz, 57, of Auburn, was driving a 2016 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound when a deer entered the road in front of him. The front of the bike struck the deer. After impact the bike continued westbound for about 50 feet where it came to final rest along the right shoulder. Wertz, who was wearing a protective helmet, was not injured. The bike had to be towed.

• A Schuylkill County driver suffered a medical emergency before crashing her vehicle on Sunday.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Alexandra E. Sterner, 54, of Pottsville, was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse northbound on Route 183 in North Manheim Township at 9:46 p.m. when she suffered the medical problem. The vehicle traveled off the road onto the east berm where the front end struck a tree.

Troopers said upon arriving on scene Sterner was unresponsive and had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was then taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital East, Pottsville Campus. The Chevrolet was towed from the scene.
