Lehighton FD alerts residents to scams

Lehighton residents should be wary of phone calls soliciting donations for local fire companies.

The Lehighton Fire Department recently posted the following message on its Facebook page.

“All Lehighton area residents it has been brought to our attention that there has been phone calls soliciting donations for local fire companies. The Lehighton Fire Department never solicits donations via phone. If you receive these calls please do not give out any information.”

Contacted Wednesday afternoon, borough fire Chief Patrick Mriss said one of the members of the fire department received a call asking for money to local fire companies or fire departments.

Mriss said it’s important for residents to be aware of any scams asking for donations.

“We just ask to remind them that we don’t solicit funds that way,” Mriss said. “Obviously it seems like it’s an ongoing issue, it cycles itself around, whether it be fire police, EMS, or veterans association.

Mriss said the only times the fire departments asks for donations are by mail, and will have their return address or logo.

“Always verify, look at the address you’re mailing to,” he said. “Then you know it’s going locally, not some other third party.”
