Tamaqua celebrates heritage

Volunteers Justin Bailey, left, and Tyler Arnold of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows use a century-old hand press to make fresh apple cider for visitors to the 34th Annual Tamaqua Heritage Festival on Sunday. The restored press is owned by lodge member Art Valentine of Tamaqua. Members of the associated Hester Rebekah Lodge staffed the adjacent booth and served up fresh cotton candy. DONALD R. Above: Workers’ rights activist Maria Septakova, alias Big Mary of Lattimer Mines, tussles with Skooksquatch, official mascot of the 250th Anniversary of the HardCoal Region, during the 34th Annual Tamaqua Heritage Festival. Of course, it was all in fun. Big Mary was portrayed by re-enactor Regina Drasher of Drums while Andy Leibenguth of Tamaqua donned the Skooksquatch outfit. The annual event was coordinated by the Tamaqua Historical Society. Scan this photo with the Prindeo app for a photo gallery from the event.
