Lehighton celebrates Public Power Week

An open house will highlight the Lehighton Borough Light and Power Department’s celebration of Public Power Week.

The open house will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Light & Power Building at 675 Bridge St.

It will include a tour of the facilities, as well as a chance to meet the employees. Refreshments will be served, along with some giveaways.

The borough’s L&P Department is celebrating Public Power Week (#PublicPowerWeek), through Saturday, along with more than 2,000 other community-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities that collectively provide electricity to 49 million Americans.

“Public Power Week celebrates the reliable, affordable electricity Lehighton Borough provides to our community,” said borough Manager Nicole Beckett. “Public power puts the people of Lehighton first, and Public Power Week gives us the chance to emphasize the advantages of locally grown, locally owned power to our citizens.

“Our service is reliable and safe, and we take pride in serving our friends and neighbors,” Beckett said. “Lehighton Borough Light & Power is proud to have served the borough for 75 years. The borough takes pride in the benefits of public power to include: community ownership, reliability, responsiveness, local presence and a focused priority of public interest.”

At present, the borough has 10 full-time employees who work within the borough’s electric utility.

Lehighton is one of 35 municipalities in the state that distribute electricity to their community.

It serves 2,500 residential customers, and 560 commercial and industrial customers.
