Thorpe man charged in assault

A Jim Thorpe man is in prison after police say he strangled his girlfriend for calling the police on his brother, who she said also assaulted her.

William Shook, 38, was charged with three counts of strangulation, simple assault and harassment after a domestic violence dispute erupted the evening of Oct. 1.

According to an affidavit of probable cause from the Jim Thorpe police:

At 9:41 p.m. officers were dispatched to the 700 block of North Street after receiving reports of an unwanted man in the residence. When the officers arrived, the victim said Shook’s brother was intoxicated and grabbed her by the neck, unprovoked, but left before the police arrived.

Police told the victim and Shook, who they said was visibly drunk, to stay inside the home, lock the doors and call if Shook’s brother returned.

After searching the area for Shook’s brother, police went back to the residence, where the victim informed them that if Shook’s brother was found, she’d like to press charges.

Then at 10:23 p.m., police were dispatched to the same residence for an active domestic dispute. Two Nesquehoning police officers also responded to the call. By the time Jim Thorpe police had arrived, Shook was being held face down on the floor by a Nesquehoning officer.

The victim told police that after they left, Shook chased her and their children up the stairs, grabbed her by the hair and dragged her down the hallway. The victim said Shook then grabbed her by the neck, constricting her breathing.

The altercation ended when Shook discovered that the children had called the police, and, the victim said, he released his grip on her neck.
