Carbon, Monroe hit by tornadoes

The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday that tornadoes touched down Tuesday in both Carbon and Monroe counties.

At 6:37 p.m. a funnel cloud was witnessed by a local residents. The National Weather Service said tree damage occurred along an unbroken path from the Big Boulder Ski Area, along a communications tower access road near Big Boulder Lake.

The tornado’s path was 40 yards wide by 0.9 miles long. Wind speeds were estimated at 100 to 110 mph.

It was classified as an EF1, one of the least-destructive tornado category.

Numerous trees were uprooted and snapped.

At 7:01 p.m. an EF1 tornado hit Jackson Township in Monroe County.

With wind speeds of 90 to 100 mph, the swath was 50 yards wide.

The path of this tornado started with tree damage along Jackson Road. Many trees were uprooted and some were snapped.

Additional tree damage was observed along Sportsmans Trail and Skyhawk Trail.

The damage path continued through a cornfield near the intersection of Mountain and Jackson roads. A large limb approximately 18 inches in diameter was snapped off a tree and caused roof damage and downed power lines to a residence.

The tornado’s path was 1.3 miles long.

The National Weather Service is expecting to conduct an aerial survey today.

The service thanks Carbon and Monroe counties emergency management, Jackson Township emergency management, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, Albrightsville fire company and local residents for their help in the storm survey.
