State police investigating incident at cleric’s Monroe Co. compound

State Police responded to the Saylorsburg compound of Turkish Cleric Fethullah Gulen Wednesday morning after a security guard fired a weapon.

A nonprofit associated with Gulen said in a news release that the guard fired a warning shot in the air after an unknown man, who appeared to be armed, attempted to enter the compound.

Around 8:50 a.m., state police were called to the Golden Generations Retreat Center on Mount Eaton Road in Ross Township.

In a news release, state police said a security guard from Golden Generations fired a weapon near the location of an unwanted person outside the security gate. The unidentified person then fled the scene.

They described the man as an unknown Caucasian male wearing all dark clothing.

The Alliance for Shared Values, a nonprofit which calls itself the voice for cultural organizations associated with Gulen’s movement, said the guard fired a shot at an unknown man who appeared to be armed and attempted to enter the retreat center which has been Gulen’s longtime home.

The nonprofit further stated in their release that a Turkish government spokesman recently said the country’s intelligence agency would launch overseas operations against Gulen’s supporters. The statement said that the Turkish government has devised kidnapping plots against Gulen and his supporters under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan has accused Gulen, 77, of masterminding a 2016 coup attempt against his government, and called for the U.S. to extradite Gulen to Turkey following the failed coup.

This week, it was reported that Gulen’s younger brother was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in Turkey after being convicted of being a member of an armed terrorist group.

Alliance for Shared Values said in their statement that the staff of Golden Generations Retreat Center are cooperating with the state police investigation to the incident. They referred all other questions to Pennsylvania State Police.

State police said the investigation is ongoing.
