Mahanoy car dealer charged with altering mileage

A Schuylkill County auto dealer has been charged with rolling back mileage on a truck.

State police at Frackville said George D. Mammarella, 58, owner of Village Auto Sales, Mahanoy City, has been charged with the theft count plus deceptive business practices, tampering with records, engaging in unprofessional conduct and substantial misrepresentation of material fact.

Troopers said an investigation began when George Snyder, no age of address given, made a complaint on May 12 that he purchased a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 4 x 4, truck from Mammarella.

Snyder said the truck was listed for sale for $12,500. The truck showed about 61,000 miles on the odometer. Snyder questioned Mammarella about the mileage on the truck.

Mammarella said that it was the vehicle’s true and correct mileage, with only one listed owner from Virginia. Snyder said he then offered Mammarella $10,000 for the truck, which he accepted. Snyder picked up the vehicle on May 19.

Troopers said during the investigation it was determined that Mammarella originally purchased the vehicle with 344,174 miles on it. He then advertised and sold the vehicle with the digital odometer as 63,269 miles.
