Hornets buzz past Pleasant Vy.

Gwen Millets had it all mapped out, just like she does for every Emmaus match.

It’s the same blueprint the Hornets have followed with great success so far this season.

And it continued on Thursday.

Millets watched as Emmaus once again executed her game plan with machine-like precision in a 25-7, 25-15, 25-12 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

“We come in to every match wanting to improve every single time,” said Millets. “I let our girls know that we have to continue to work to keep the momentum on our side, to keep the match at our pace. And that’s what we really work on. We work on a lot of our team goals; did we hit our team goals today? Are we hitting them for the season?

“But mainly, we talk a lot about momentum, keeping the pace and making it our game. And that’s what I think we did tonight; we made it our game. We kept the pace up and we did some really nice things.”

There was no letdown – or letup – from the Hornets (10-1), who won their fifth straight match.

“I think we got those leads from our aggressive serving,” said Millets. “And I think the girls did really well tonight on our serves. Pleasant Valley got some really tough balls up, and they had some really good defense, and blocking, especially.

“We had to be ready for those types of balls to come back. But I think our aggressive serving is really what made us standout tonight.”

The Bears (10-3-1, 6-3) rallied in the second set. But with the score tied 7-7, Caroline Bond stepped to the service line and sparked a run that powered Emmaus to a 13-7 advantage.

Bond finished with seven aces, while Macy Van Den Elzen added 11 kills and four aces.

“They had quite a knuckleball. It just moves, and it drops,” Pleasant Valley head coach John Gesiske said of the serves.

“It all starts with the service game. If you can’t get that, you get frustrated. It’s a little bit simpler – you’d think it’s simpler than a spike coming at you.”

Jaya Bhagat (seven kills) and Maiah Sabol (four kills) provided additional firepower for the Hornets, who also got nine digs from Rebecca Dalstad.

“Sometimes, it’s very easy in volleyball for the momentum to just go to the other side,” said Millets. “You don’t even realize it, and all of a sudden it’s on the other side and you’re struggling to get it back.

“So that’s what we really work on this year, just keeping it together, working together as a team and learning how important it is to take control of the match, and just play our game.”

Cameron Caffrey had seven assists and six digs for the Bears. Ari Weaver added four aces to go along with three kills, three digs and three assists, while Summer Karaman recorded five digs and three kills, and Ari Thourot dished out five assists.

JV

… Emmaus won the JV match, 25-12, 25-17.

SHORTHANDED

… Gesiskie noted that the team wasn’t at full strength, with libero Desi Beade dealing with an injury suffered late last week. “It shakes it up. We don’t have the manpower to put in there. … It’s a domino effect. But everything’s a learning experience, and hopefully we’ll move forward from there,” he said.

HIGH HONOR

… Emmaus entered the match ranked No. 1 in Pennsylvania by MaxPreps. The Hornets were second in the District 11 Class 4A rankings. Parkland was first.
