Local Sports Roundup: Results from Sept. 17

It was a good day for area field hockey teams on Monday, as Northern Lehigh, Palmerton, and Lehighton all posted wins.

FIELD HOCKEY

No. Lehigh-Catasauqua

Jada Mills had a hat trick to lead Northern Lehigh to a 5-0 Colonial League win over Catasauqua.

Madison Posivak and Rachel Nonnemaker scored the first two goals for the Bulldogs (6-2), before Mills tallied the final three.

Nonnemaker also added an assist, as did Hailey Evans, Brooke Nonnemaker, and Madison Amorim.

Southern Lehigh-Palmerton

Goals from Emily Baumgardt and Megan Serfass cemented Palmerton’s 2-1 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

Sayler Burke also added an assist for the Blue Bombers (3-3).

The game was called in the second half due to weather.

Holy Redeemer-Lehighton

Lehighton shut out Holy Redeemer 3-0 in a non-league game.

Karissa Hough and Alicia Shaffer each had a goal in the first half for the Indians.

Mackenzie Hoats added a score after the break.

Lehighton, now 5-2-1, outshot its opponent by a 16-2 margin.

BOYS SOCCER

Dieruff-Pleasant Valley

Mirza Sabovic paced Pleasant Valley’s 7-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Dieruff.

Sabovic recorded a hat trick and assisted Timmy Covart on his goal, while Matt Erhardt also recorded two assists.

The Bears (6-1) also received goals from Damian Sopanski, Zion Moore, and Canyon Marks, while Jake Ammerman added an assist.

PV finished with a 19-5 advantage in shots

Palmerton-Bangor-

Northwestern

Palmerton’s Logan Kresge shot an 80 as Palmerton won a Colonial League meet against Bangor and Northwestern.

Kresge’s round helped the Blue Bombers top the Slaters (470) and Tigers (478) in the tri-match. Josh Mooney finished with an 88.

Luke Hallman led the way for the Tigers with an 84.

Ava Goodman scored two goals to lead Pottsville to a 6-1 Schuylkill League Division 1 win over Lehighton.

Amya Quinones had the lone score for the Indians (1-5).

Northern Lehigh-Salisbury

Salisbury posted a 5-0 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Rylee Donaldson picked up a hat trick for the Falcons.

The Bulldogs (0-9) had six corner kicks, but were unable to score.

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Hayley Yoder’s goal led Pine Grove to a 1-0 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Kate Bos had 18 saves for the Olympians (3-4), who were outshot 19-8.

Pleasant Valley-Parkland

A second-half score helped Parkland top Pleasant Valley 1-0 in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.

Brooke Walker’s goal after intermission was the difference for the Trojans. Kenzie Galucy made five saves to preserve the shutout.

Emma Strohl had one save for the Bears, who held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.

VOLLEYBALL

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe posted a 25-13, 27-29, 25-21, 25-23 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.

Brandy Montemuro had 11 kills, 17 digs and seven assists for the Olympians, while Kelsey Carroll added three blocks, nine kills, 12 digs and 16 assists.

Abbey McGinley had 25 digs for the Olympians, with Autumn Snyder adding six kills. Thorpe (5-1; 3-1) also received 11 digs from Tamara Encarnacion and three blocks from Mia Lowin.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Pottsville swept Tamaqua 25-6, 25-14, 25-13 in a Schuylkill League match.

Ella McLaughin had 28 digs for the Blue Raiders (1-5; 0-4), while Emily Amershek recorded eight digs.

Allen-Northwestern

Northwestern edged Allen 25-15, 8-25, 12-25, 25-20, 17-15 in a non-league contest.

Ashley Bennicoff dished out 14 assists for the Tigers (4-3), while Grace Shuhay had 10 digs and five kills.

Jovina Fager added six kills and three digs, with Shante Duminie contributing five kills and six blocks.

JR HIGH BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Panther Valley

Tamaqua won a pair of junior high girls basketball games against Panther Valley.

Lorelei Plasha had seven points and Makayla Bartenope added six as the Blue Raiders posted a 25-5 victory in Game A.

Plasha tallied 11 in Game B to aid the Tamaqua 37-12 win. The Raiders also received eight points from Laney Werner.

For PV, Maynard finished with seven points.
