Schuylkill commissioners approve funds for road improvements

In infrastructure moves last week, Schuylkill County commissioners approved $15,000 in liquid fuels money for East Brunswick Township to be used for 2018 road improvements.

This liquid fuels project was initially approved in 1994 as a county aid allocation to be used for bridge work in East Union Township.

Commissioners also approved a $10,010 change order with Kevin E. Raker Construction LLC to remove seven trees that had fallen adjacent to and on county bridge 28 in East Brunswick Township as a result of the flooding on July 24 and 25.

In other matters, commissioners issued a proclamation in honor of Constitution Week, Sept. 17-21.

The week marks the 231st anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention.

“It is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary, and to the patriotic celebrations which will commemorate the occasion; and

“Now, therefore, be it resolved, that we, the Board of Schuylkill County Commissioners, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17 through 21 as “Constitution Week” and ask our citizens to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, remembering that lost rights may never be regained,” the proclamation states.

Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved the renewal of a 36-month library maintenance agreement between the county and Thomson Reuters (West Publishing).

This agreement is required to continue updates and replacement subscriptions for west legal print references for the law library and each of the judges.

The total 36-month contract price is $362,532, which includes a 5 percent increase per year for the second and third years.
