A New Tripoli man charged by Tamaqua police with sexual crimes against a child will spend up to 16 years in state prison.

Joseph A. Bevins, 25, was charged with indecent sexual assault on a person younger than 16, statutory sexual assault, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent exposure, corruption of minors, photographing or filming a sex act, unlawful contact with a minor for sexual purposes and contact with a minor resulting in sexual abuse.

He pleaded guilty to indecent sexual assault on a person younger than 16, aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors, and statutory sexual assault.

Judge John E. Domalakes sentenced Bevins to five months and 15 days to 16 years in state prison on the indecent assault charge, two to four years on the aggravated sexual assault charge, 12 to 24 months on the corruption of minors charge, and to 12 months to 24 months on the statuary assault charge.

Tamaqua Police Chief Henry Woods, then a corporal, charged Bevins in connection with a sexual relationship Bevins had that began in 2015 with a 14-year-old girl he met at a party.

Bevins was 22 at the time.

The girl’s mother discovered the relationship after it ended in April 2016. She reported it to police in October 2017.
