Lights On Celebration, expo planned

Two area events that aim to help children and their families are being held on the same day in the same place next month.

The SHINE Afterschool Program will kick off the dual event on Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. in Jim Thorpe Area High School’s auditorium with its 19th annual Lights On Celebration.

The celebration will showcase students from the Carbon and Schuylkill SHINE centers and how they “Shake it up with SHINE.”

Beginning at 6 p.m. in the high school, state Rep. Doyle Heffley’s Drug and Alcohol Awareness Expo kicks off as a way to educate families on combating the opioid epidemic, learning where children hide drugs and drug paraphernalia in their rooms, how to use Narcan and more.

A prescription drug drop-off box will also be available to get rid of any unused or expired medications.

The two-hour expo is a family-friendly event and children can wear their Halloween costumes and trick or treat at the vendor tables.

Refreshments will be available to support school organizations.
