Jim Thorpe school board OKs move to advertise for new superintendent

Jim Thorpe Area School District’s board of directors voted Monday night to advertise for a new superintendent.

The item was not on the regular agenda for the board meeting, but director Raniero Marciante, who said Wednesday that he feels the district needs a leader with more experience, made the motion.

“We’re still tweaking the wording, but the plan is to officially post the position in October,” Marciante said.

Jim Thorpe’s current superintendent, Brian Gasper, is under contract until June 30, 2019. Gasper was hired in March 2014, with a contract ratified several months later, giving him just over four years experience on the job. Marciante said he feels the next superintendent should have at least five years of experience.

“There are other skills and degrees that would be required, but we’re still drawing all of that up,” Marciante said. “Experience is the biggest thing though.”

Contacted Wednesday, Gasper said he had no comment on the job posting.

“Good things are currently happening here at Jim Thorpe,” he said. “I’m proud to work for the students, staff, parents and residents of the district.”

A three- to five-year contract extension for Gasper came up for vote in April, but was voted down 6-3.

At the time, Director Pearl Downs-Sheckler said the vote was in no way indicative of the board’s decision on whether they will keep Gasper as superintendent.

“It’s to be determined,” she said in April. “There needs to be a conversation. It’s not stating that we’re going to keep him, it’s not stating that we’re not.”

Asked where the job would be advertised, Marciante said it would be posted through the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, in the Scranton and Reading area newspapers, and through the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21.
