Weatherly alumni association sponsors Matthew Shepard Foundation events

In 1998, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay student at University of Wyoming died following a brutal attack.

Since his death, Matthew’s parents, Judy and Dennis Shepard, have been determined to prevent others from experiencing similar tragedies.

The Matthew Shepard Foundation empowers individuals to embrace human dignity and diversity through outreach, advocacy and resource programs.

“We share Matt’s story and embody his vigor for civil rights to change the hearts and minds of others to accept everyone as they are through our programs,” the foundation says.

On Sept. 26, Judy and Dennis Shepard will appear during two events at Weatherly Area Middle School. A forum at 7 p.m. is open to the public.

The day will kick off with a student assembly featuring VIP guests at 9:30 a.m.

In addition to the Shepards, the event will feature Todd Snovel, executive director of the Pennsylvania Commission of LGBTQ Affairs; Jason Marsden, the executive director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation; Tom Connors, mayor of Weatherly; and Thomas J. Gerhard, Carbon County Commissioner.

Admission and parking are free for the event.

The events are sponsored by the Weatherly Area High School Alumni Association.
