Lehighton Boys and Girls Band to host open house on Saturday

Built in 1957, the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall continues to house band rehearsals and lessons to this day.

To commemorate its longevity, the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band will host an open house at 3 p.m. Saturday at the site, located at 197 N. Sixth St.

The event is being dubbed “Over 60 Years Since the Dedication of the Hall,” according to Alyssa Schoch, music director of the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band.

Schoch said the event will celebrate 60 years for the group, which has invited alumni to come and share memories and stories.

“One of the board members found that it was 61 years of the dedication of the hall,” Schoch said. “This was such a great occasion, it’s been around for over 100 years.”

Schoch said there will be a brief ensemble concert of current students and alumni, as well as alumni speaking about their memories of the band hall.

Also, photos of the band hall and its members throughout the years will be displayed. Refreshments will be served following the program.

Schoch said the event will be a great opportunity to learn more about the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall, and hear the talented musicians who started here.

“My goal is to raise more awareness and celebrate the history of the band hall,” she said. “We have so many pictures and so many records since 1910, it’s great to see how it’s grown and changed and kind of evolved into modern times here.”

Schoch said the band will perform several songs, a few duets and a solo.

“I think they’re really excited,” she said. “It’s really great to see them realize that this has been going on long before them, and I think they’re very excited to be part of the band hall’s history, and in years to come, look back and realize that they were a part of this.”

Schoch said there will also be a PowerPoint presentation on the history of the band hall conducted by Ron Rabenold, a teacher at Lehighton Area Middle School.

In 2010, the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band celebrated its 100th year by organizing a concert with students and many alumni.
