Local Sports Roundup: Results from Aug. 31

Pleasant Valley’s soccer teams opened the season with wins on Friday.

The boys pulled out a thriller in double overtime, while the girls rolled to a shutout victory.

In other area action, the Northwestern girls cross country team took first at the Lion Invitational, while Lehighton’s field hockey squad also opened the season with a win.

BOYS SOCCER

PM West- Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley pulled out a 2-1 double overtime victory over Pocono Mountain West in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

The Bears’ Damarcus George finished off an assist from Matt Erhardt to account for the game-winner.

Zion Moore posted PV’s first goal off an assist from Mirza Sabovic in the opening half.

Chris Tambasco scored an unassisted goal for the Panthers.

No. Lehigh-Catasauqua

Damian DiPaolo’s four goals sparked Catasauqua to a 6-1 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Jacob Nye and Westley Brown also scored for the Roughies.

Josh Sollars tallied the Bulldogs’ only goal.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pleasant Vy.-PM West

Five different players scored as Pleasant Valley rolled to a 7-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pocono Mountain West.

Brianna Clark led the Bears’ attack with two goals. Teammates Teah Cardoza, Larissa Mulligan, Danielle DiMarco and Faith D’Amato also added scores. PM West added another with an own goal.

Rylee Robinson recorded two assists for PV, while Aurora Cruci, Cardoza and Alex Weaver each had one.

Catasauqua-No. Lehigh

Catasauqua opened the season with a 2-0 Colonial League shutout over Northern Lehigh.

Haleigh Toto and Brielle Davies scored the goals for the Roughies, who held a 12-8 advantage in shots.

CROSS COUNTRY

Jim Thorpe, Northern Lehigh, Northwestern at Lion Invitational

The Northwestern girls took first place in the Class 2A race at the Lion Invitational, while Northern Lehigh’s Reagan Pender was first in the girls Class 1A race.

The Northern Lehigh girls and Jim Thorpe boys placed second in the team standings.

The Tigers’ Madeline Consuelos (2nd), Alyssa Zack (4th), Sarah Supplee (7th), Allison Costa (8th) and Kailyn Jones (9th) all finished in the top 10 to easily clinch the team title.

The Bulldogs’ Katie Guelcher finished seventh.

Sam Hydro and Marc Waselyn led the Olympians by finishing 11th and 12th in the Class 2A field, while the Bulldogs’ Preston Kemery followed with a 14th-place finish.

The Tigers were led by Randall Zack and Kane Flickinger, who took 17th and 19th.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lehighton-No. Lehigh

Gabrielle Szoda scored in overtime to lift Lehighton to a 1-0 victory over Northern Lehigh in a non-league contest.

The Indians held a 4-3 edge in shots and a 5-3 difference in corners.

Lehighton keeper Angelina Romito recorded three saves in the shutout win. The Bulldogs’ keeper, Kendall Heiney, ended up with five saves.

PM East-Pleasant Vy.

Pocono Mountain East rolled to a 4-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Jaiden Wittel and Jane Fiore each scored two goals for the Cardinals.

Bears’ keeper Emma Strohl ended with 10 saves.
