Last labor union at Miners has disbanded, hospital says

The last labor union representing workers at St. Luke’s Miners Campus has voted to decertify, according to a news release from the hospital.

OPEIU Local 112 voted on Aug. 9 in favor of decertification. The 77 employees covered by the union who cast ballots chose decertification by a 2-to-1 margin, the news release said.

OPEIU (Office and Professional Employees International Union) represented 90 employees, a mix of full time and part time. The membership included nurses, medical laboratory technicians, pharmacists, physical therapists and occupational therapists.

“St. Luke’s understands and supports our employees’ decision to turn away from union representation,” Miners Campus President Wendy Lazo said. “This indicates to us that our employees feel they are valued and treated fairly, which is a point of pride for St. Luke’s University Health Network.”

An OPEIU official said they needed more details before they could comment on the decision.

OPEIU was the sole remaining union at Miners Campus after a former AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) unit representing 184 employees voted to decertify in 2014.

St. Luke’s said OPEIU’s vote will allow it to give pay raises to the former union employees, which will bring their compensation in line with the rest of the health network.

The network plans to implement the new pay rates in employees’ next full pay period, and they will transition to the network’s health plans as of Jan. 1, 2019.
