August 30, 1946 — Alex Maketa scatters eight hits and only gives up one run to lead Lansford to a 6-1 victory over Coaldale in the opening game of the Panther Valley League best-of-three championship series. Maketa is given a lead to work with when the Lansford bats push across five first-inning runs. Joe Fignar delivers a two-run double during the frame, while Chester Trojan, George Puskar and “Peka” Daniels add run-scoring hits. Puskar finishes with a pair of hits, while Coaldale receives two hits from Calvin Mock.
