Palmerton man attempts to elude police after traffic stop

A Palmerton man is in custody after attempting to elude police following a traffic stop.

Cory Vazquez, 28, faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, habitual offender, resisting arrest, drivers required to be licensed, two counts of driving under suspension, careless driving, reckless driving, three counts of stop signs and yield signs, and duty of operator on approach of emergency vehicles.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Adam Shimer of the Palmerton Police Department:

Shimer was on patrol in the 1100 block of Mauch Chunk Road and saw a green 1997 Honda bearing no registration and an extinguished driver’s taillight doing burnouts in the middle of the roadway.

Shimer activated his emergency lights and siren to conduct a traffic stop, but the Honda took off into the parking lot of the West End Saloon up to Maryann Alley, then on to Tunnel Street.

The Honda drifted around the turn and ran through the stop sign on Tunnel Street and Mauch Chunk Road.

Shimer followed Vazquez driving the Honda west as it was speeding on Mauch Chunk Road and crossing over the center dividing lines.

The Honda then entered into Bowmanstown and turned up Stoney Hill Street, then turned onto Ore Street.

The Honda failed to stop at the stop sign at Ridge Street and Ore Street before it finally came to rest in the driveway of 196 Ore St.

Shimer got out of his car as the driver, later identified as Vazquez, got out of his vehicle and ran away.

Shimer chased Vazquez through several backyards back down to Mauch Chunk Road.

After Shimer threatened to deploy his Taser, Vazquez stopped.

A records checked revealed Vazquez had his license suspended for DUI charges and the registration and inspection on the car were expired.

Vazquez was also deemed a habitual offender by the state Department of Transportation.

He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.

Vasquez is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,000 straight bail, not posted.
