Traffic stop leads to gun, drug charges

WILKES-BARRE (AP) — Police charged a Monroe County man with gun and drug offenses following a traffic stop Saturday night.

An officer stopped a vehicle driven by Elijah Castera, 21, of Effort, for a traffic violation on South Empire Street at about 11:55 p.m. Saturday, police said in a news release.

An officer observed suspected marijuana in plain view inside the vehicle, police said. A search of the vehicle revealed a semi-automatic pistol and narcotics, according to police.

Castera was charged with carrying an unlicensed firearm, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was arraigned Sunday morning and sent to Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 30.
