August 20, 1983 — Bob Thomas betters a field of 119 runners in 90-degree heat to capture first place at the Panther Valley 10-Mile Run. Thomas, of Jim Thorpe, turns in a time of 54:49 to finish 40 seconds ahead of runner-up Dave Horvath of Palmerton. The top female finisher, who placed 22nd overall, was Tamaqua’s Lori Lawson, who was clocked in an hour, five minutes, and 46 seconds. Other runners from the area to place in the top 10 include Palmerton’s Billy Cyr (ninth) and Art Iris (10th).
