Man who stole bicycles, tools, in custody

A Philadelphia man who stole a pair of bicycles, tools and other items in several counties is in prison.

Sokhon Sam, 31, of the 100 block of West Chew Avenue, faces charges on one count each of theft by unlawful taking; receiving stolen property; and loitering and prowling at nighttime.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Jonathan Roth of the Lehigh Township Police Department:

At around 1 p.m. Aug. 14, township police received information regarding a stolen vehicle from Bethlehem State Police.

Walnutport Borough police officer Scott Ledo stopped the stolen vehicle on Mountain View Drive by Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21.

The driver of the stolen vehicle took off running into the corn field, and was not located that night.

At 5:30 a.m., a victim who lives on the 4000 block of Maple Drive left for work and noticed his work van had been rummaged through.

The man arrived at his work site and noticed his tools were missing, including two DeWalt 20 volt max lithium ion cordless drill/impact drill combo kit valued at $319 each; six 2 volt max batteries valued at $50 each; 100-foot tape measure valued at $20; two flex drivers valued at $16 each; tips and apexes valued at $30.

Officer Robert Gogel was also dispatched to the 4000 block of Old Main Street, Walnutport, to take a report from a woman who said her vehicle was rummaged through and a black backpack valued at $25 was removed.

While in the area, Sam took an 18-speed Avigo Mountain Ridge Bike valued at $125 and two boxes of Jason Voorhees Cereal valued at $13 each belonging to a victim on the 4000 block of Mountain View Drive.

He also took a Nishiki Pueblo Bike valued at $300 from a victim located in the 3000 block of Holly Drive.

Gogel received a call at 5:09 p.m. advising him that a Hispanic-looking man with a backpack tried to sell the caller a backpack full of tools.

Gogel then encountered the man, identified as Sam, in the area of the 4000 block of Mountain View Drive.

Sam discarded a blue Avigo full-suspension mountain bike and his bags and ran into the wooded area behind Farmers Insurance.

The Avigo bike was identified belonging to the victim in the 4000 block of West Mountain View Drive valued at $125. The victim also reported missing her mailing package of two boxes of Jason Voorhees cereal that was on her front porch. Gogel secured the bags which were full of the construction tools reported to him on Maple Drive earlier.

Fogel located Sam riding a white and pink Nishiki bike east on Mountain View Drive into Moore Township at around 6:53 p.m. The bike was taken from the 3000 block of Holly Drive and valued at $300.

The victim said a gray Schwinn bike was left at his house.

When Lehigh Township police Chief Scott Fogel approached, Sam took off into the wooded area.

Sam was eventually located with the use of Bangor Police K-9 and area residents, and placed into custody.

State police took custody of Sam for theft of the vehicle from earlier in the morning.

Lower Merion Police also said they will have an arrest warrant for Sam.

Sam is currently incarcerated in Lehigh County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Bail for his crimes in Northampton County will be set this week.
