A Nazareth man who admitted to police that he ”shot up” with drugs before police’s arrival at a crash scene at Allen and West Railroad streets in Nesquehoning has been arrested by borough police on two counts of driving under the influence of a controlled substance as well as careless driving.

The incident happened on April 17 when police were summoned to the scene at 9:20 a.m. after a tractor trailer struck a parked vehicle.

In an affidavit of probable cause, Officer Frank Buonaiuto said he found Harry K. Stahl, 45, “hardly breathing and completely unconscious” when he arrived at the scene. The officer said he observed signs of drug use, namely intravenous marks on both of Stahl’s arms, suspected a drug overdose, and performed rescue breathing on the man using a hand-held ventilator until emergency medical services personnel arrived at the scene.

Buonaiuto said he seized an orange and clear syringe and a small plastic baggie with white powder inside of it, and followed the ambulance that transported Stahl to the St. Luke’s Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale.

The officer said Stahl was coherent and awake at the hospital and consented to a blood test, admitting to the officer that he “shot up dope by using a hypodermic needle” after having purchased a bag of heroin in Nazareth before coming to Nesquehoning.
