Community strength-training programs for adults

Penn State Extension will offer the StrongWomen/Growing Stronger Program, a six-week exercise program for middle-aged and older adults, at the Eldred Community Center in Kunkletown.

Classes will be led by Keri Byrne, nutrition educator, and Diane Szwajkowski, retired massage therapist and personal trainer.

The StrongWomen/Growing Stronger program is a safe, effective strength-training and nutrition program for those who have been active or sedentary for the past few years and are interested in improving their health.

Classes, which meet twice a week, consist of a nutrition lesson and eight to 12 strength-training exercises that help improve strength, balance and flexibility. Individuals who have participated in the program have become stronger, more active, and energized.

Classes begin Oct. 1 and meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. for six weeks.

Adults (men and women) 40 and older are invited to attend a free information session to learn more about the program. Sessions will be held as follows:

• Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. at Eldred Township Community Center, Kunkletown

• Aug. 27 at 9 a.m. (Location to be announced.)

• Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at St. Peter’s Community Resource Center, Weissport

There will be a slide presentation, a demonstration of some of the exercises, paperwork and opportunity to ask questions.

If you miss one of the information sessions, you must show up 30-60 minutes before the first class to complete the necessary paperwork.

There is a fee of $60 for the class. Bring a check, made payable to “Penn State University” or register online at https://bit.ly/2ME9DBA. Online registration closes Sept. 28.
