Lehighton National Night Out set for Tuesday in the upper park

What do you get when you combine a food truck, an ice cream bus and a free movie the park?

The answer is Lehighton’s National Night Out 2018, a cooperative effort between the Lehighton Police Department and Lehighton Downtown Initiative.

It will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the borough’s upper park, and will mark the fourth straight year the borough has hosted the event, said borough police Detective Matt Arner.

Arner said the Mahoning and Franklin Township police departments have also agreed to partner with the borough police department to once again host the event in the community.

He said there will be food from KCL’s Great Food on the Go, an ice cream bus, Caricatures by Gene and complimentary popcorn courtesy of Larry Markley Nationwide Insurance that will be staffed by a local Boy Scout Troop.

Also on hand will be the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Carbon County Rocks, the Lehighton Fire Department, Lehighton Ambulance, the Lehighton Outdoor Center, the Lehighton Memorial Library, PathStone Head Start, Rep. Doyle Heffley’s office, and Pennsylvania State Parole.

A free movie in the park, “Zootopia,” will be shown in the park at dusk thanks to the LDI.

“We are very grateful for all of the vendors and partners, but most importantly, LDI has been such a great help in putting this together for us,” Arner said. “We would not be able to do this event without their help and their efforts.”

Arner said the borough police department initially held National Night Out in 2008 and 2009, and was the first in the county to do so.

“It’s a great opportunity for the community to meet with not just the police, but other first responders and other community groups that they may not be aware of, or may not know the services that they offer,” he said. “And also to have a great time.”
