Two killed in Berks crash involving state trooper

Two people were killed in a Berks County crash  involving a state trooper Saturday morning.

According to police, the incident occurred at 10:22 a.m. on Route 422 and Sportsman Road, South Heidelberg Twp., Berks County

State Police were responding to  412 W Oak Ave in Robesonia, to assist Western Berks Regional Police Department for an aggravated assault of a Western Berks Police Officer. 

Peter Budwash, of Robesonia was wanted for probation and DUI warrants.  He is currently being charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and possessing instruments of a crime because of this incident.   

While travelling with lights and siren activated to the Oak Ave location, a PSP marked patrol unit was involved in a three-vehicle crash at the above location.  The PSP unit was travelling westbound on Route 422.  The PSP unit struck a vehicle on the driver’s side.  In the car were, James B. Cooling,  62, and Michele J Cooling, 65, of Denver, Pa.

They were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Berks County Coroner’s office. 

The impact then pushed both the PSP unit and Cooling vehicles into the McCoy vehicle.

A second trooper was also responding to the aggravated assault in a marked patrol unit came upon the crash and immediately began providing first aid. 

Paul McCoy, 82, and Mary Lynn McCoy, 72, from Narvon were injured in the crash and transported to Reading Hospital. 

The male trooper was also injured in the crash and transported to Reading Hospital.

The PSP Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist Unit (CARS) is reconstructing the crash.  The Major Case Team and Forensic Services Unit are assisting.   

The Pennsylvania State Police is currently seeking Peter Budwash, for aggravated assault, simple assault, burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and possessing instruments of a crime because of this incident.
