Concert to honor Tamaqua performer

The Cressona Band will perform in memory of noted Tamaqua benefactor and performer Sheldon L. Shafer at East End Park next week.

The Sheldon L. Shafer Memorial Concert will honor the lifelong resident and 30-year member of the Cressona Band.

Shafer was also president of the Tamaqua Crime Watch, a member and officer of the fire police, as well as a member of the East End Fire Co. and Hometown Fire Co. and the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Shafer helped build and fund the East End Park, and spent countless hours volunteering there. He sponsored a Cressona Band concert each year for 30 years.

In 1994, Shafer was named “Tamaqua Citizen of the Year.”

Members from all of the organizations that Shafer worked with are encouraged to attend.

Principal conductor John F. Potlunas and associate conductor Dale C. Schimpf will lead the Cressona Band in the homage to their most storied member.

Shafer’s chair will be left empty in his honor.

The band will also present a plaque to Shafer’s family, including brother Lee Shafer, nephew Ben Shafer and nepher-in-law Mike Brimmer, which is to be given to his widow, Mary.

Mayor Nathan Gerace will also read a proclamation recognizing Shafer’s service to the community.

The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.
