Weatherly reaches title game of Valley Babe Ruth League

Weatherly advanced to the championship round of the Valley Babe Ruth playoffs Tuesday with a win over Hazle Township.

In other recent playoff action, the Northern Yankees won their Blue Mountain League series against the Hellertown Royals.

Andrew Ray had two hits and knocked in two runs to help Weatherly defeat Hazle Township, 8-2, in the Valley Babe Ruth semifinals.

The victory sends the third-seeded Weatherly squad into the championship round against No. 1 seed Drums. The title game is scheduled for tonight.

Steph Yurchak added a hit and two RBIs, while Gary Buck contributed a pair of hits and an RBI.

The winners also received two hits from Carl McHugh and AJ Knepper. Brian Keil and Dave Stratchko each chipped in with a double and and RBI, while Seth Derr added a double.

McHugh pitched four no-hit innings during the win.

Yankees-Royals

The fourth-seeded Northern Yankees won their opening-round playoff series against the Hellertown Royals, posting shutouts on Sunday and Monday to advance to the semifinals.

The Yankees, who captured the best-of-three series in the first two games, now face top-seeded Northampton in the semis.

In Sunday’s opener, Tamaqua graduate Caleb Calarco tossed a five-hitter to blank the Royals. The former Blue Raider walked two and struck out two.

Anthony Gallo delivered a bases-loaded hit in the bottom of the seventh to knock in Justin Kratz with the game-winning run.

In Monday’s clinching game, Northwestern graduate Tyler Schreiner had two hits, one a double, and scored a run in the Yankees’ 5-0 victory.

Kratz allowed five hits and struck out four.

Anthony Gallo collected three hits and two runs, while Jeff Charles added a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Tamaqua grad Casey Rother chipped in with a double and an RBI, while former Blue Raider Bo Rottet added a run scored.
