Decker, Milkvy and Vavra to enter District 11 Hall of Fame

The inaugural class of the District 11 Hall of Fame was recently announced.

Fourteen inductees were selected as members of the first class.

Inductees were selected from nominations made by member schools, officials’ chapters, and media membership. Nominees are selected based on their accomplishments on the high school level, and are not inclusive of accomplishments outside of high school athletics.

Constituencies may nominate additional athletes by completing the forms located on the District 11 website, www.districtxi.com.

The nomination deadline for each class is May 1 of each induction year.

The first Hall of Fame Ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center Lehigh Valley in Breinigsville.

Dinner will precede the induction ceremony. Tickets for the event are $50 and can be purchased by contacting District 11 Chairman Bob Hartman at hartmanb@whitehallcoplay.org. The deadline to purchase tickets is Oct. 1.

Bob Mlkvy

Palmerton High School’s Mlkvy made his mark on the basketball court. From 1954-57, Mlkvy scored a school-record 1,925 points. He led the Blue Bombers to three straight league championships. The 1956 team played for a state championship against Farrell High School. He was named All-State twice and Parade All-American in 1957. Mlkvy passed away in 2016.

Diane Decker

Marian Catholic’s Decker was an outstanding basketball player from 1981 to 1985. While playing for the Fillies, Decker amassed 2,377 points and 1,116 rebounds in leading Marian to a PIAA Championship in 1984. She was named Converse All-American and USA Today Honorable Mention All-American.

Allyssa Vavra

Panther Valley’s Vavra made her mark in the swimming pool for the Panthers. Vavra was a five-time PIAA Champion and 18-time All-American during her high school career. She was a 17-time District 11 Champion, helping her team win a title in 2008. She also established a school record in the 200 IM.

Sue Butz-Stavin

Butz-Stavin has made her mark as the head field hockey coach at Emmaus High School. While leading the Green Hornets, Butz-Stavin coached 29 straight District 11 Championship teams of her 33 won, as well as 12 PIAA Championship teams and won over 900 games.

J. Birney Crum

Crum led the Allentown High School Canaries from 1925 through 1950, amassing 190 wins in football and 490 wins in basketball for a total of 680. From 1945 to 1947, his Allentown High teams won three basketball state championships. Coach Crum was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1975 and passed away in 1981.

John DDonmoyerDDonmoyerfinished his career as the most successful boys’ basketball coach in District 11 history, securing 624 wins during stops at William Allen (23 years) and Moravian Academy (17 years). He is a member of the Lehigh Valley Basketball Hall of Fame, and the court at William Allen High School is named in his honor.

Al Erdosy

Northampton High School’s Erdosy was the Head Football Coach from 1939-1968. He owned a remarkable record of 169-25-9. His teams won 21 Lehigh Valley League championships. Coach Erdosy may be best known for his use of the short punt offense. In 1969, the football stadium at Northampton High was named after him.

Matt Gerhard

There are a very small number of four-time PIAA champions in the sport of wrestling. Catasauqua’s Gerhard is one of them. Gerhard won his four PIAA titles from 1981-1984 and finished his career with a record of 127-3. Gerhard also won four District 11 and regional championships.

Michelle Marciniak

Allentown Central Catholic’s Marciniak was named National Player of the Year by Parade Magazine and Gatorade, as well being name Naismith National Player of the Year in 1991. She scored 3,025 points in her high school career that spanned from 1987-1991.

Ed McCaffrey

Multi-sport athlete McCaffrey had an outstanding career for the Vikings of Central Catholic. He was a key contributor to two basketball state championships, scored 1,637 points, and was AP All-State in 1985-86. He was a Parade All-American and AP First Team All-State in Football in 1985.

Larry Miller

Basketball standout Miller played hoops at Catasauqua High School, and is the all-time leading scorer in District 11 history with 2,722 points. He also secured 2,062 career rebounds. He led his team to four straight league championships and three straight District 11 Championships. His Catasauqua career spanned from 1960-64.

Ray Nunamaker

Nunamaker is one of District 11’s most decorated wrestling coaches. In 34 years as the Head Coach at Nazareth High, Coach Nunamaker won 468 dual meets and coached eight wrestlers to nine PIAA Championships. His teams won 20 league championships and seven District 11 Championships. Nunamaker passed away in 2015.

Artie Owens

Owens was an outstanding running back and track athlete at Stroudsburg High School. As a senior, Owens established Pennsylvania records with 41 touchdowns in a season. He was a Kodak All-American, UPI and AP All-State, All-Conference, and a Big 33 selection. He was also clocked in the 100-yard dash at 9.8 seconds.

J. Milo Sewards

Sewards began as head basketball coach at Allentown High School in 1950 and immediately led his team to a PIAA State Championship. As head coach for 24 years, he led his teams to nine league championships and four District 11 Championships. He ended his career with 408 wins, winning over 71-percent of his contests. The Gym at William Allen is named in honor of him. Sewards passed away in 2003.
