Franklin Township third in West Hazleton tourney

Franklin Township defeated Jim Thorpe to place third in the West Hazleton 7-8 year-old tournament.

Franklin Township erupted for 19 hits en route to a 14-2 victory over Jim Thorpe in the third-place game of the West Hazleton 7-8 year-old tournament.

Cash White (double, four runs scored) and Logan Bellis (two doubles) had three hits apiece for Franklin.

Dominic Lawrence, Braylon Hunsicker (three runs scored), Grant Birnbaum (two runs), Brayden Ulshafer and Alex Bedocs (two runs) all added two hits.

Bellis pitched two innings, striking out six and allowing one run, while Hunsicker pitched a scoreless sixth inning for Franklin, recording two strikeouts.

Nick Faust had three singles and Tyler Hoherchak had a double for Jim Thorpe.

Valley West

Valley West surged ahead to top Franklin Township 16-9 in Saturday’s semifinal game.

West used a seven-run fifth inning to break a 9 -9 tie. Christopher Knelly and Cole Jordan both had three hits and scored three runs for the winners.

Domonic Lawrence collected three hits and scored twice for Franklin, while Braylon Hunsicker (two runs scored), Grant Birnbaum (one run), Logan Bellis (one run), Brayden Ulshafer (one run) and Chase Llewellyn all added two hits apiece.

Grant Birnbaum pitched two perfect innings for Franklin, striking out six.

Jim Thorpe’s Connie Mack state playoff game against South Parkland, scheduled for today, has been postponed to Wednesday.

The two teams will now meet in a loser’s bracket game at Limeport Stadium, starting at 5 p.m.

Thorpe dropped an 8-7 decision to Hellertown in its opening contest last Thursday.
