Rehrig made his mark in three sports

Brian “Pip” Rehrig will be one of the inductees into the 2018 Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame.

Upon graduating from Jim Thorpe High School in 1992, Rehrig earned 10 varsity letters in three sports: football (4), basketball (3) and baseball (3). He excelled in all three sports, helping the Olympians advance to the District 11 finals in both basketball and baseball. He also quarterbacked the football team to a 7-4 regular-season record.

In football, he was a three-year starter at quarterback and threw for 3,066 yards — which was the second most in school history at that time. While having great success at quarterback, Rehrig also enjoyed playing free safety on defense. As a senior in 1992, he was named to the Mid-Penn First Team at three positions — quarterback, free safety and kicker.

He was named to the Times-News All-Star First Team as a safety and to the Big 33 watchlist as a defensive back. He was TV 13’s Player of the Week twice and was selected as a co-captain and MVP of the football team in 1992.

In basketball, Rehrig was a tri-captain of the 1991-92 team that finished with a 20-8 record, was the District 11 silver medalists and qualified for and advanced into the PIAA state tournament.

But he surpassed those achievements in baseball when, again as a tri-captain, he led the Olympian baseball team to a 19-2 season record. The highlight was when he pitched a six-hitter against Williams Valley, striking out eight and walking only one in a 6-1 victory as the Olympians won their only District 11 Baseball Championship in 1992.

He said “beating Williams Valley for the title was the high point of the season” for him. He was undefeated as a pitcher with a record of 8-0 while batting .309 with 12 RBIs and 21 runs scored. He was named to the First Team Schuylkill League All-Star Team.

He finished his athletic career at Jim Thorpe by being named “The Best of the Best” in 1992 and was also named the Times News Male Athlete of the Year in 1992.

Rehrig is employed by United Inspection Services and has three sons: Gunner, Nolan and Matthew.

In the upcoming weeks, the other 2018 inductees into the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame will be highlighted. They are Ed Hedes, Robert Hodor and the 2012 girls basketball team.
